Local Government Elections Begin Across Gujarat
Introduction
Gujarat has started a wide-scale voting process for various local government bodies, including municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats. Approximately 41.8 million eligible voters are participating in these elections.
Main Body
The current elections cover 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats. This includes the first-ever elections for nine new municipal corporations, such as Anand and Vapi. Polling began at 07:00 and ends at 18:00. The State Election Commission reported that early turnout ranged from 15.1% to 22.97%, although some technical problems with Electronic Voting Machines were reported early in the day. These elections follow a major update to the voter lists and new reservation rules. For example, 50% of seats are reserved for women and 27% for Other Backward Classes (OBC). As a result, seven district panchayat president positions are reserved for OBC candidates for the first time. Furthermore, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 736 seats without needing to contest, which is a significant increase compared to previous years. Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), have criticized this trend. They claimed that over 400 of their candidates withdrew on April 15 due to external pressure and bribes, although the BJP has rejected these assertions. Meanwhile, the AAP has fielded about 5,000 candidates, its highest number ever. Historically, these local results often predict the outcome of assembly elections, which will next take place in 2027.
Conclusion
The voting process will end with the counting of votes on April 28, although re-polling may occur on April 27 if it is considered necessary.
