Introduction
Indian diplomat Sibi George held discussions with United Nations counter-terrorism officials and the Secretary-General in New York, while the President of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to visit India later this month.
Main Body
On April 24, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, met Alexandre Zouev, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism. The meeting focused on India''s collaboration with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in addressing the threat of terrorism. The previous day, George met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. During that meeting, George reiterated India''s commitment to multilateralism and exchanged views on UN reforms, including enhancing the representation of the Global South. India''s efforts in this regard were cited through initiatives such as the India-UN Development Partnership Fund. On April 20, India delivered a national statement at the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council reforms, emphasizing that the current structure inadequately represents developing nations, particularly in the permanent membership category. India highlighted similarities between its approach and the African model for reform. Separately, the President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, will visit New Delhi on April 28 at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Her itinerary includes bilateral meetings with government officials, a meeting with the UN country team in India led by Resident Coordinator Stephan Prisner, paying homage at Rajghat, and an interactive session with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on artificial intelligence governance. Following her visit to India, Baerbock will travel to Beijing for similar engagements.
Conclusion
These diplomatic activities reflect India''s ongoing efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation and advocate for institutional reforms within the United Nations, while also hosting a senior UN official for bilateral discussions on global governance issues.
