Dangote Group Plans to Build a Big Oil Refinery in East Africa
Introduction
Aliko Dangote is the richest man in Africa. He said he wants to build a big oil refinery in East Africa. The refinery will be as big as his refinery in Nigeria. He said this at a meeting in Nairobi. The presidents of Kenya and Uganda were there. He said the project will take four to five years. It will happen if governments help. This is part of a plan to stop selling raw materials. Africa wants to make more energy by itself.
Main Body
Dangote said the new refinery will help many countries. These countries are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The oil for the refinery will come from the region. They will use pipes to move the oil. This will make costs lower. Dangote also started building another big refinery in Nigeria. That refinery will be the biggest in the world. Dangote said Africa makes a mistake. It sells raw materials and buys finished products. This makes Africa poor. He wants people to travel freely in Africa. He said travel rules stop trade and investment. President Ruto said they are talking about a refinery that many countries can use. President Museveni said selling raw materials is almost a crime. The Nigerian refinery now supplies most of the jet fuel in Nigeria. It also sells fuel to Europe. But the price of jet fuel went up a lot. Some people made the fuel hard to find. A director said Nigeria loses 29 billion dollars every year. It loses this money because it sells raw materials without processing them. Trade between South Africa and Nigeria is 2.16 billion dollars. South Africa buys oil from the Dangote refinery. A deputy minister said the refinery helps Africa''s energy safety. Dangote plans to invest 40 billion dollars by 2030. He will invest in oil, chemicals, fertilizer, and factories. He said Africa needs local leaders. Foreign investors do not always help build local economies. The Africa Finance Corporation said Africa has a lot of money in pensions and insurance. This money can build roads and other things.
Conclusion
The new East African refinery can help the region work together. It can help Africa make its own energy. The success of the project needs governments to work together. It also needs money from inside Africa. Dangote''s refinery in Nigeria already changed the country. Nigeria now buys less fuel from other countries. Africa is becoming more important in the world oil market.
