Main Body
Shankar Goud suffered severe burns after pouring petrol on himself and setting himself on fire on April 23 in Narsampet, Warangal district. This incident happened during a demonstration by RTC employees who are on an indefinite strike. The workers have a list of 32 demands, which includes merging the RTC with the state government. Goud was first treated at a government hospital in Warangal and then moved to a special hospital in Hyderabad, where he died at around 1:30 AM on April 24. In a separate incident in Nalgonda, another RTC employee reportedly tried to kill himself but was not injured, according to Roads and Buildings Minister Venkat Reddy. Police also investigated a similar report in Khammam, but they concluded that the event was not related to the strike and was caused by personal family problems. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of RTC employees has announced a series of protests from April 24 to 29. These include silent marches and giving documents to legislators. The JAC leaders are scheduled to meet with a committee of government officials appointed by the state government. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed shock at the death and offered his sympathy to the family, promising government support. Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar asked people to remain calm and blamed the extreme actions on provocative statements by political leaders. On the other hand, opposition parties have shown support for the striking workers. BRS MLA T. Harish Rao stated his party''s support for the strike, and BJP state president N. Ramchander Rao announced that party members would visit RTC depots to show solidarity with the employees.
Conclusion
The death of driver Shankar Goud has made the labor dispute between Telangana RTC employees and the state government more serious. Scheduled talks between employee representatives and government-appointed officials now carry greater urgency.
