Digital Self-Enumeration Begins for 2027 Census in Bihar and Telangana
Introduction
The Census of India 2027 has started its digital self-enumeration phase in Bihar and Telangana, marking a shift toward a fully digital national population count.
Main Body
In Bihar, the self-enumeration process began on April 17 and will end on May 1. The directorate of census operations reported that 24.35 lakh entries were completed by Sunday. Data shows that Vaishali district had the highest number of submissions with 4.12 lakh, followed by Madhubani with 3.97 lakh. Other successful districts include Khagaria, Gopalganj, and Bhojpur, whereas Patna ranked sixth despite being more urbanized. Participation grew quickly, rising from 32,000 entries on the first day to an average of 3.04 lakh daily by the eighth day. Following this digital phase, a second stage for house-listing and a housing census will take place from May 2 to May 31. Approximately 2.60 lakh supervisors and enumerators, mostly teachers, will visit homes across 38 districts. People who did not use the online portal will be recorded during this time, while those who did must verify their information using a 12-digit code. The survey includes 33 objective questions about socio-economic conditions and assets to help the government create evidence-based policies. At the same time, Telangana started its self-enumeration phase on April 26, which will continue until May 10. Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla opened the exercise, noting that this is the first census since the state was formed. This will be followed by digital house-listing from May 11 to June 9. State officials emphasized that moving to a digital census will improve transparency and accuracy. They asserted that this data is essential for allocating resources and planning healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
Conclusion
The 2027 Census is now moving from digital self-registration to field verification and house-listing in both Bihar and Telangana to ensure that all residents are counted.
