Recovery of Stolen Grave Items from James Bulger Memorial Site
Introduction
Relatives of James Bulger, a two-year-old who was kidnapped and murdered in 1993, have announced the recovery of objects taken from his grave after two incidents of vandalism earlier this year.
Main Body
The grave of James Bulger in Kirkdale Cemetery was damaged twice within six weeks – first in February and again in March. Two cherub statues next to the headstone were broken. A public fundraising campaign to repair the headstone raised more than £23,000. In response, a 78-year-old man from Kirkby was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of theft and criminal damage. The family, in a post on the James Bulger Memorial Trust charity’s Facebook page, stated that they had found the two damaged cherub heads after receiving a tip. They also reported recovering the original sleeping cherub statue and several other items that had been taken from James’s grave. The family further noted that additional items had been taken from other graves, and that police would return those objects to the respective families.
Conclusion
The family has recovered some of the stolen grave items, while police are helping to return other seized objects to their owners. The investigation into the vandalism is still ongoing.
