Cooper Mitchell Bamberry to Stand Trial on Multiple Child Sex Offence Charges
Introduction
Cooper Mitchell Bamberry, a resident of Helensvale, will stand trial in the District Court. This follows a hearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court where he faced 129 charges related to sexual offences.
Main Body
The legal case involves a large number of serious allegations against Bamberry, who was 22 years old when the charges were filed in early 2025. The 129 charges include five counts of rape, 53 counts of indecent treatment of a child, and 45 counts of using the internet to contact people under the age of 16. Furthermore, he is accused of producing and sharing child exploitation material, grooming, unlawful stalking, and threatening to share prohibited recordings. These charges followed police investigations and a public appeal, which led to a raid on the defendant's home and the seizure of electronic devices. During the hearing, Deputy Chief Magistrate Stephen Courtney heard testimony from a female witness via video link. As a result, the court was closed to the public for 25 minutes, although it was clarified that the witness was not a child affected by the alleged crimes. Regarding the legal process, defense lawyer Adam Guest agreed that the case should proceed to trial. The prosecution, led by Qi Wang, provided several witness and police statements to the court. When the magistrate asked for a plea or a statement, the defendant refused to answer. It was also noted that the defendant is the son of Mark Bamberry, a magistrate appointed to the Queensland judiciary in 2022.
Conclusion
The defendant remains in custody and will be held until a trial date is set in the District Court.
