UMNO Withdraws Support for Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun
Introduction
On April 27, 2026, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) announced that it no longer supports the Chief Minister of Negeri Sembilan, Aminuddin Harun. As a result, the current administration has lost its majority in the state legislature.
Main Body
The political crisis began due to a disagreement over the state's monarchy. On April 19, four territorial chiefs (the Undangs) removed ruler Tuanku Muhriz and named Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as his successor. This action follows the Adat Perpatih system, a traditional custom where the ruler is elected and can be removed by the Undangs. However, Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun claimed that this decision was invalid because one of the chiefs, Mubarak Dohak, had previously been dismissed. In response to the Chief Minister's comments, all 14 UMNO assembly members decided to withdraw their support for the government. UMNO chairperson Jalaluddin Alias emphasized that the party wants to protect the state's traditional institutions and the constitution. He also criticized the Chief Minister, stating that executive council members were not informed about his discussions before the situation worsened. Consequently, the administration now holds only 17 of the 36 seats, which is below the 19 seats needed for a majority. Meanwhile, the opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN), represented by Mohamed Hanifah Abu Baker, expressed a willingness to work with the 14 UMNO lawmakers to maintain stability. This potential partnership was confirmed through a cooperation letter sent to UMNO secretary Mustapha Nagoor. Analysts suggest that this conflict may reflect deeper tensions within the federal unity government, as partners Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional struggle to balance their interests before the next national elections.
Conclusion
Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun will stay in his position until he can prove he still has majority support, following a request from ruler Tuanku Muhriz. In the meantime, the state government continues its daily operations.
