The Atlantic Ocean Current is Weakening
Introduction
There is a big current of water in the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists say this current is getting weaker. It might stop completely by the year 2100.
Main Body
The current moves warm water from the tropics to the North Atlantic. This keeps Europe warm. Now, the ice in the North is melting. This puts fresh water into the ocean. The water is not heavy enough to sink. Because of this, the current slows down. If the current stops, the weather will change. Europe will have very cold winters. Some places may be 7 degrees colder. In the South, Antarctica will get much warmer. The sea level will rise. This will flood some coasts. In Africa, it will not rain. This means farmers cannot grow food. The current is the weakest it has been in 1,600 years. There is a 50% chance it will stop.
Conclusion
Scientists agree the ocean current is not stable. The world must prepare for these big changes now.
