Shooting and Hostage Crisis in Kyiv

Introduction

A man killed six people in Kyiv on Saturday. He also hurt 14 other people. He shot people on the street and took people inside a supermarket. Special police killed the man.

The man was 58 years old. His name was Dmytro Vasylchenkov. First, he started a fire in his home. Then, he went to the street with a gun. He shot four people on the street. Then, he went into a Velmart supermarket. He took people as hostages. He killed one more person there. Another woman died later in the hospital. A 12-year-old boy was also hurt. The police arrived and closed the area. A woman tried to talk to the man for 40 minutes. She wanted him to let the hostages go. The man did not listen. He shot at the police. Then, special police entered the building. They saved four hostages and killed the man. The man was born in Moscow. He had a Ukrainian passport. Police found bad messages on his computer. He wrote things against Ukraine and Jewish people. The police think this was a terrorist attack. They want to know if other people helped him.
