Fatal Shooting of Chicago Police Officer at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital
Introduction
A Chicago police officer was killed and another seriously injured on Saturday morning after a suspect in police custody opened fire at a medical facility.
Main Body
The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital. Two officers were transporting a male suspect, who had been detained on suspicion of robbery, to the facility for medical observation. During this process, the suspect discharged a firearm, resulting in the death of 38-year-old Officer John Bartholomew, a ten-year veteran of the force. A second officer, aged 57 with 21 years of service, sustained injuries and remained in critical condition as of Sunday. Following the discharge of the weapon, the suspect exited the hospital building and subsequently fled the scene. He was later apprehended by authorities, at which time a weapon was recovered. While Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed that three weapons were recovered during the investigation, the police department has not yet disclosed the means by which the suspect obtained the firearm. Surveillance imagery indicates the suspect was unclothed and had electrodes attached to his chest while fleeing. Regarding institutional protocol, Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital stated via social media that the individual was subjected to a metal detector scan upon arrival at the emergency department. The facility maintains that the suspect remained under continuous law enforcement escort throughout the duration of his stay prior to the shooting. In response to the event, Mayor Brandon Johnson characterized the incident as a tragedy and noted that mental health resources have been allocated to the police force.
Conclusion
The suspect remains in custody while the second officer remains in critical condition; the investigation into the acquisition of the weapon continues.
