Seven Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha Members Join the Bharatiya Janata Party
Introduction
Seven Rajya Sabha members, including Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, have left the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move has significantly reduced AAP's presence in the Upper House.
Main Body
The move took place on Friday, when seven members joined the BJP as a group. Mr. Chadha claimed that the decision was necessary because AAP had moved away from its original principles and values. In contrast, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann criticized the departing members, calling them traitors. He asserted that the BJP is trying to weaken the AAP and has betrayed the voters of Punjab. There has been significant discussion regarding Raghav Chadha's previous influence in the Punjab government. Chief Minister Mann and MP Balbir Singh Seechewal mentioned a government guest house in Chandigarh as a place where Mr. Chadha allegedly held too much power. This view was supported by AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang, who suggested the party made a mistake by giving Mr. Chadha excessive authority. Similarly, BJP leaders had previously described Mr. Chadha as a 'super CM,' although they changed their tone to welcome the MPs after the merger. Other reports suggest the defection was caused by internal disagreements over the selection of Rajya Sabha candidates in 2022. Vikramjit Sahney indicated that Mr. Chadha and Mr. Pathak felt frustrated after being ignored despite their work on strategy. Furthermore, MP Kang noted that the party should have chosen local leaders from Punjab instead of people who do not live there. However, Chief Minister Mann defended the choices, stating that the members were selected for their professional expertise rather than their electoral power. Following the move, AAP supporters protested in Jalandhar and Ludhiana, painting graffiti on the homes of some of the departing members. As a result, the Punjab Government removed the security details for Mr. Singh and Mr. Mittal. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs then sent CRPF personnel to protect Mr. Singh's home. The BJP has criticized the removal of state security, claiming it is an attempt to pressure the lawmakers.
Conclusion
This mass defection has greatly reduced AAP's strength in the Rajya Sabha and has caused serious political and social tension between the party and the members who left.
