Russian Oil Flows Again to Hungary and Slovakia
Introduction
For almost three months, oil did not flow through the Druzhba pipeline. On April 23, 2025, the oil started to flow again to Hungary and Slovakia. After that, Hungary stopped blocking a big EU loan for Ukraine.
Main Body
The pipeline carries oil from Russia through Ukraine to Central Europe. In January 2025, the oil stopped. Ukraine said a Russian attack broke the pipeline. Hungary and Slovakia said Ukraine did not fix it quickly. No one checked who was right. The EU said Russia was responsible. Russia said Ukraine stopped the oil. On April 22, oil started moving again. On April 23, Slovakia and Hungary said they got oil again. Slovakia will get 119,000 metric tons of oil by the end of April. At the same time, Hungary stopped blocking a €90 billion loan from the EU to Ukraine. The loan was stuck because Hungary said no. The Slovak prime minister said the pipeline was not broken. He said the stop was a political move. Ukraine did not answer his words. Hungary and Slovakia still need a lot of Russian oil and gas. Other EU countries want to stop using Russian energy after the 2022 war in Ukraine.
Conclusion
The oil flow started again. This solved a problem between Hungary, Slovakia, and Ukraine for now. The EU loan can go ahead. But the countries still argue about why the oil stopped. Hungary and Slovakia still use Russian energy. The pipeline will probably cause more problems in the future.
